We took our teenagers for a treat all to themselves at The Ordinary Climbers Ltd in February.
We had the lovely Helen on hand to greet our families and take them to get kitted up with all the necessary equipment. Then, they all got climbing! Due to this being a small event with fewer participants, the children were able to use the bigger climbing walls which everyone really loved. They all got stuck into the challenge and relished the opportunity to indulge their adventurous side.
Some of our Dads even got involved in the climbing action which was fantastic for family bonding and making precious memories together. Those parents that didn’t climb also stayed throughout the afternoon and watched their children climbing and provided encouragement where needed. It was a joy to see the children growing in confidence as time went on and becoming even braver and more fearless!
Being a teenager with cancer brings unique challenges that our younger children do not have to deal with in quite the same way. Teenagers can suffer more from low self-esteem, poor body image and feelings of isolation to a greater extent as a result of cancer treatment. Therefore, peer to peer support between teenagers of a similar age and in similar circumstances is even more vital than between our younger children. The chance to feel normal can make all the difference and our teenager only events are vital to encourage this bonding away from younger siblings.
Thank you to our sponsor BBC Children in Need for making it all possible.
