Introduction
By popular demand, we spent another lovely morning and lunchtime at Romeo and Juliet in Hailsham completing a pasta making workshop. Our families enjoyed the event so much last year that we booked to come back in February and our families and hosts couldn’t wait to get started!
Getting Stuck In
After introducing the children and families to each other, the restaurant very kindly treated everyone to a welcome drink of their choice. Then, all attendees put on their aprons and rolled their sleeves up ready to make their own fresh pasta. Under the expert tutelage of our (Italian award-winning) chef, our families started mixing the dough. There was no cheating and using electric mixers in this class – everything was prepared by hand which made for a lot of fun and a lot of mess! There was laughter all around as hands got covered in dough and shoes covered in flour.
After a lot of perseverance, the dough was ready and then came the really tricky part: rolling the dough as thinly as possible. There were a lot of false starts and pasta stuck to the table but in the end, everyone had their very own pile of freshly cut tagliatelle proudly sitting on the table in front of them.
The Taste Test
Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for! Each person’s pasta was given its own number and then whisked away to the kitchen to be expertly prepared by the chef. There was a choice of 3 delicious sauces – sage butter, classic tomato or warming ragu. Our families all sat together to enjoy their lunch and the fact that it had all been made themselves made it taste so much better.
Our families left the restaurant happy, full and with the rest of their pasta ready for another dinner at home. They had all had a wonderful opportunity to chat to other families and children and create memories as a family: “We all have a learnt a new skill, valuable family time that we can try again at home! All 5 of us had so much fun, giggles, mess, flour everywhere!”
Thank You
Yet again, we are truly grateful to our sponsor for this event BBC Children in Need. Their support has been vital in making this event, and so many others, possible for our children and families.
We also want to extend our gratitude to our incredible hosts at Romeo and Juliet. They were warm, friendly and helpful and made the day incredibly special for everyone. They even allowed some of the children to take home armfuls of balloons, and they left with beaming smiles on their faces, saying “It was more than amazing”.
